The Real Dirt on Farmer John DVD
$19.98
An epic true tale, this documentary of maverick Midwestern farmer John Peterson is filled with all the heart and soul we all feel towards preserving the Earth and ourselves in the process.
Peterson's lifelong love affair with his family's farm in Caledonia, Illinois - population unknown, about 75 miles west of Chicago and not even on the AAA map - is the subject of this soon-to-be-released documentary feature film.
Winner of 11 prestigious film festivals nationwide - including both the Grand Jury and Audience Awards at the annual Inspiration Film Festival - the story touches a deep chord in the collective psyche.
Footage includes beautifully evocative super-8 home movies shot by John's mother Anna during the 1950s. Here we see the Peterson family in an idyllic America that has long since disappeared. For more than 75 years the farm was successful, providing a solid grounding for three generations of this all-American family. 82 minutes.
"The Real Dirt on Farmer John examines 50-odd years in the life of its eponymous subject - a most compelling character - and in doing so literally provides the viewer with food for thought."
- Scott Foundas, Variety
"It's making audiences laugh and cry, often at the same time, and garnering standing ovations," states pre-release information.
"Al Gore is a fan and so is Alice Waters, legendary author and owner of the Chez Panisse restaurant and cafe in Berkeley, California."
Filmmaker Taggart Siegel, a friend of Peterson's since 1979, documents the history of an individual, his family and land that parallels the history of American farming. "This is an emotionally moving and entertaining story," says Siegel, "full of drama, heart and soul. It's about passion, art, personal desolation and transformation, more than it's about farming."
