Harris Hydroelectric Turbines & Options
Solar only generates power when the sun is shining; hydro generates power 24 hours a day. It only takes a small input to cumulatively add up to a large daily total. The generating component of the Harris turbines is an automotive alternator equipped with custom-wound coils appropriate for each installation. Field strength, and therefore output, is site-adjustable with a large rheostat. The built-in ammeter shows the immediate effects of tweaking the field. The Permanent Magnet alternator eliminates brushes and rotating field coils. An output-optimizing circuit automatically adjusts for best output under any flow rate. Overall maintenance is reduced and the P.M. alternator delivers slightly more wattage under most operating conditions (see output charts). The rugged turbine wheel is a one-piece Harris casting made of tough silicon bronze. There are hundreds of these wheels in service, with no failures to date. USA.

The Harris Pelton micro-hydro turbine is designed for high head (25+ feet), low flow (up to 200gpm) sites. Four-nozzle Pelton systems are recommended for sites with flow rates above 60gpm. Permanent Magnet alternator models produce significantly more power in marginal sites. The 12 volt models can produce up to 750 watts, 24 volt models can produce up to 1500 watts, and 48 volt models can produce up to 2500 watts of power, all depending on site head and flow rates. In a Pelton system, water is collected upstream from the turbine and channeled in a pipe down to the turbine location. At the turbine, the water passes through a nozzle, where it accelerates, strikes the turbine runner, and turns the alternator. These turbines need very little water flow to run efficiently and produce significant power output. Typically, the turbine generates DC electricity -- 12volt, 24volt or 48volt -- which is then either stored in a battery for future use or used directly to power DC appliances. An inverter can also be incorporated into the system to convert the DC electricity to standard household AC electricity.
